The ending of the race came as a complete and utter shock to those in attendance as Mine That Bird, trained by “Chip” Woolley, Jr. and ridden by Calvin Borel, came back from dead last out of the first turn to take the lead in the final furlong. He took the lead so fast after the final turn that NBC Sports race announcer Tom Durkin didn’t notice that the gelding took the lead until it had a three-length opening ahead of the pack. This is something you will rarely ever see! In a jumps race at Southwell, United Kingdom in a 7 starter race in 2002, all jockeys and horses fall during the race. However, there was a winner as the rules state “A horse can be remounted and continue in the race as long as he goes back to where he departed” and thats exactly what Tony McCoy did on the hot favourite Family Business to take out the race completely unchallenged!
